Irish coffee, a delightful concoction of coffee, whiskey, sugar, and cream, has become a beloved beverage enjoyed worldwide, and it’s no wonder why. But did you know this drink also has a rich history? Join us this month as one of your favorite restaurants in Nashua shares some history on one of our favorite beverages!
The story begins at the Foynes Airbase in County Limerick, Ireland, during the 1940s. It was a time when transatlantic flights made pitstops, and weary travelers sought refuge from the harsh weather. Joe Sheridan, the head chef at the restaurant in Foynes, decided to create a special drink to warm up the shivering passengers.
Sheridan brewed a strong cup of coffee, added a generous pour of Irish whiskey, stirred in some sugar, and topped it off with a dollop of fresh cream. The result was a comforting blend that not only warmed the travelers but also won their hearts.
The magic of Irish coffee made its way across the Atlantic to the United States, thanks to a travel writer named Stanton Delaplane. Delaplane encountered the delightful beverage at Shannon Airport and was determined to recreate it in the States.
Upon his return, Delaplane worked closely with Jack Koeppler, the owner of the Buena Vista Café in San Francisco. The duo faced challenges in replicating the perfect layering of cream on top of the coffee. After numerous attempts, they found success by slightly whipping the cream and carefully pouring it over the back of a spoon onto the coffee.
In 1952, the Buena Vista Café began serving Irish coffee to its patrons, and it quickly became a staple of their menu. The café’s commitment to preserving the authenticity of Irish coffee, including its unique cream layering technique, contributed to the drink’s widespread popularity in the United States.
Today, Irish coffee is celebrated globally, enjoyed in homes, cafes, and pubs alike. Variations of the classic recipe have emerged, with some enthusiasts experimenting with different types of whiskey, sweeteners, and even flavored creams.
